Do yourself a favor and watch this five minute video. It just might be the best valedictorian speech ever delivered.
When my box of books arrived last week I was excited for about 15 seconds. Months earlier, I was elated when I read the email informing me my story Substituting Courage would be in the July 2024 anthology Just Say Yes. https://bit.ly/3RcBH29 This would be my second published story with Chicken Soup for the Soul. My first was in February 2020 with my story The Lost Cell Phone. As a hobby writer, I do get excited when someone decides what I wrote is worthy of publication. But, just like the valedictorian so beautifully conveyed, the ecstatic moment of recognition, is just that, a moment. I liken it to witnessing a firework.
Substituting Courage is my story of being a single mom lacking academic confidence and yet returning to college and ultimately becoming a school teacher. The road to getting my classroom keys is nothing short of a series of miracles, or what one might call “God-incidences”.
I’ll continue to submit writing pieces to Chicken Soup. Maybe they’ll like another one and I’ll get that 15 second high. Plus, the life sacrifice is pretty minimal.
Now, the book I’ve been dabbling with for quite awhile is another thing. If I ever hold a copy of that in my hand, the elation will surely outlive the life of a firework. If, or should I say when that happens, I will proudly check that off the proverbial bucket list.

Set your mind on things above, not on things on earth.
Congratulations! Your 16 seconds aren't over yet. I loved the speech, too. Keep putting it out there.
What a wonderful moment for you! Enjoy it and remember it when things don't go as you thought they would! I, too, went back to school as an adult student and fulfilled my dream of being a teacher. We have so much in common!
